• ClubsmallWelcome

Our aim is to encourage and promote sailing and racing on Lake Windermere. We run an extensive racing programme from April to October, and social events throughout the year.

The Club was founded in 1860, and was granted its Royal Warrant during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. We have occupied our present site at Bowness Bay since the 1880's. Our present club house was built in 1965.

  • 0barsmallCome and Join Us!

We are a sailing club with superb facilities, and an ideal location for sailing on England's largest lake, Windermere.

For over 150 years, the Royal Windermere Yacht Club has been at the centre of sailing on Windermere, and today maintains large and active fleets of keelboats and dinghies, and organises a full calendar of sailing and social events.

  • TrainingsmallLearn to sail on Windermere

We are an approved RYA Training Centre, and run regular training courses for both adults and children.
They are open to non-members as well as members.      We exist to promote sailing and racing on Windermere, and we welcome people of all ages to get in touch and try the sport of sailing.

Children can join our Youth Squad, a successful new venture started last year.

  • 17-3yachtssmallDinghy and keelboat racing

We hold regular racing for several different classes of dinghy and keelboats.
Our fleet of Windermere 17 footers, shown here, has developed continually since 1904.
We host open meetings for the classes that we sail, see our calendar.
  • HandicapsmallHandicap Racing

In addition to our class racing, we sail dinghies of any class using the PYS system. These races are sailed alongside our other dinghy classes on Thursdays and Sundays.

  • CruisersmallCruiser Racing

In 2012 we adopted a Cruiser fleet, which races on Sundays alongside our other classes.

The fleet consists mainly of First 21.7s, but all sailing cruisers are welcome to join in with our rapidly expanding fleet.

  • Hand3smallMonday Evening Handicap Racing

On Monday evenings, starting around 6.30, we hold a race for any sailing boat, whether dinghy or keelboat, fully crewed or singlehanded. The races are sailed under the PY handicap system. All are welcome.

This is an ideal introduction to racing for new or prospective members.

Well done to Alex Nield, Steven Wilson, Robert Richardson, Zach Shirra and Ethan Leahy who took part in the Southport 12 hr Race achieving 2nd place overall see full results here

Well done to all the team finishing second overall in the 12hr race and scooping up many other fastest laps prizes. They led almost all day but unfortunately had a broken kicker. They had fought back into first by the end but incurred a penalty as the kicker was repaired outside of the changeover zone. They did themselves and RWYC proud. Thanks to Ian Shirra for dealing with the long and difficult protest. Also a thank you to Mandy Newman and Amanda Wilson for boat transportation and supporting the team.
